Instructions:

Sometimes words are not enough, and pictures have to be shown to clarify things or show other things of interest... However, sometimes it doesn't seem to work and the correct instructions for publishing pictures in the forum are given here.

Pictures can only be shown if they reside on a public webserver where you can access it via a direct http-link.

So, how do I make my picture visible in the forum?

It is very simple, You simply press the "Insert Image" button in the icon bar shown in the message editing routine, and you will get 2 image tags [img][/img) (please note that the delimiters are really [][] )...
Then insert the direct http-link to the picture [img]HERE[/img).

The "foolproof" way is to change the "Format Mode" in the message editing routine from "Basic" to "Prompt", and then press the "Insert Image" button. This will give you a popup box where you paste the http-link into.

You can of course enter the img /img tags directly into the text too, but remember to put [] around them.

If you have your own website, like some of our forum members have, just paste the http-link to the picture on your site between the img tags.

You cannot show pictures that:

1 - Reside on your own hard drive, since there is no direct upload functions to the forum itself. If you use the "Insert Image" and point to a picture on your own hard drive, only you will see it.
The rest of the world will be staring at the red "X" instead of your magnificient picture...

2 - Reside in a Yahoo group file area or such since:
a) Yahoo file areas mostly require a login to Yahoo groups.
b) Yahoo links to pictures give you a session ID link, which expires after 30 minutes or so.
The rest of the world will be staring at the red "X" instead of your magnificient picture...

3 - Have special characters in their file names, since some special characters are interpreted by the web server as something else... Please rename your files so their names do not have special characters or blank spaces...
The rest of the world will be staring at the red "X" instead of your magnificient picture...

I don't have a website, and I don't know anyone who has...

Don't worry, you are not left out in the cold by this simple inconvenience...Smile
As a free service, forum members are allowed to upload pictures to this site. This is a part of a planned picture album feature of this site.

How do I upload a picture to this site?

1 - Follow this link: http://www.marklin-users...s/upload/uploadstart.asp

2 - Select a category for the picture. If it is only for forum use, select the "Not published" category.

3 - Enter your forum username and password, and then click "Proceed to file upload".

4 - If you selected the "Not published" category, there is no need to fill in the descriptional fields. Otherwise, please fill in the fields.

5 - Use the "Browse" button to search for a picture on your own computer. When you have found it and selected it, press the "Upload picture" button.

6 - A result page is displayed, and if "Is it saved?" shows "True", the file upload was successful.

7 - On the result page, you are also presented a direct link to the picture you just uploaded. Copy this link and use it in the "Insert Image" of the message editing routine.

8 - This should now show your picture successfully in the forum when you have submitted your post.Smile

The general format of picture linking to uploaded pictures is:
http://www.marklin-users.net/upload/community/category/username/picture_file
Red = The category the picture was published in. Example: LayoutPlans
Blue = Your forum username
Green = The name of the file you uploaded.

Some additional important notes:

1 - Please do not post pictures wider than 800 pixels for use in the forum, they mess it up a little bit, use your picture manipulation program to resize the picture.

2 - Allowed file types when uploading to marklin-users.net are .jpg, .png, .gif and .pdf, external links can have any format.

3 - Please use simple file names with only a-z and/or numbers in them. Avoid special characters and spaces in the file names.

4 - Please note, 200 kB is the absolute maximum size that you can upload! This should be more than enough for a good quality .jpg photo in 640x480. Unspecified errors will occur (mostly http 500) if you try to upload bigger files, so please check before uploading.

5 - By posting pics on this site, you agree on sharing them on this site without claiming any copyright issues towards this site.

What have I uploaded?
There is also a function to list your uploaded pictures. It only shows them as links, but you can view them and get the link to them for publishing.
http://www.marklin-users...ns/upload/listmypics.asp

Happy picture posting!

Why not .gif ? For photos jpeg is the natural choice, but sometimes you want to upload simple drawings, e.g. connection diagrams. These look better and have smaller file size if you choose .gif.

Why not .gif?

Because the instructions say so...Cool
This relates to uploading pictures to the marklin-users.net server, image links to other sites are of course not included in this restriction.

There is also a small problem... When the picture size is too large the xxx?? does not come back with an error -> instead it gives you a 500 error and leaves you sitting there in amazement..

I only worked out the problem by accident as I had a 201k file initially... ( I didn't think about checking the size after I had reduced the image too 640x400 - assumption on my part!).

Hi,

When posting pics I found that there should not be a line feed between the [ img ] and [ /img ]-Tags and the URL of the pic. Otherwise you see the Xs.

Another point: having uploaded a picture erroneously (sorry !), can I remove it from the server again ?

Regards

is it possible to post a small MPEG or .MOV file to the discussion board - like lets say we had a short movie - a minute or so - of trains taken with our digital cameras?
I have finally upgraded to a modern digital camera (from 35 mm and my clunky and huge Kodak DC120 digital) to a new little nikon.
I was thinking that if I get to see some cool rail operations or old steam excursion trains, it would be most cool to not only see picture of the train/scene, but also see it move and hear the sounds.
Just wondering, as I haven't seen this yet.

This happened to me recently. If you can find your old post, go to the photo you want to use again, right click on it, and select "properties". The URL for the photo can be copied from there.

Question to webmaster: There is a maximum of 200 Kb to be downloaded
on each picture, but I don’t find any absolute maximum for all
pictures downloaded by one member, to my favorite internet-page. Does such a limit exist?

There is a limit on how big one picture can be that is uploaded to the site, you have got that correctly...wink

Can you see anything anywhere in the instructions mentioning that only a limited number of pictures, or a limited total allowed space occupied for pictures, per member?

Let's just say that we have a "reasonable" amount of space available...Cool

Hi Rudy,
I just uploaded a pic, no problems...

How big is file you want to upload? There is a limit around 200kB, and bigger files will give you the error you describe...

Rudy, how big is the file itself?
Have you followed the naming convention in the first post, like avoiding spaces and special characters in the file name?

The message above says that you haven't selected a file when I look in the code...

How have you resized the pic? What program did you use?
I mean, a 640x480 pic with good quality is usually about 70-100kB with 80-90% quality compression...

200 000 bytes was the maximum, but I have raised the limit now a few hundred bytes to handle true 200kB.

Could you email me the picture, so I can do some troubleshooting?

Maybe also the original so I can try some resizing options?

Rudy, as the Webmaster suggests, the error means your picture file is too large. You need to compress it to make it smaller so it is less than 200,000 bytes. Your image editing software should be able to do this.

Thanks for the update Juhan.

I saved Sora's directions of how to post a picture, but I haven't got the nerve. much less the talent to get one on my pictures sent to your site.

Reasently I got my own web host, where I upload the photos used in this forum and for my own website.

I try to follow the advice not to post pictures wider than 640 pixles. Sometimes I wish to make a clickable link to a bigger photo. Is it possible - or rather - how do I make a 640-picture clikcable to a larger version?

Sometimes we see "this image is clickable". How can I do it?

Juhan, your system for posting pics obviously works, but it's somewhat cumbersome. For a different approach go to this address: http://forum.zealot.com/1240/ and in that forum the pics can be taken directly off of the hard drive without going to an outside 3rd party site. Go into it and try it. It's much simpler. Using your system it may be easier to use a personal web site for transferring to this forum, however, many people don't have their own web sites. Then there is a problem. Check out the zealot forum, it works very well. Thanks for all your work with the Marklin forum, it's needed and looks good. Regards, bob

I don't see that there is a problem... As a member you can upload a picture to this site with the procedure described in the first post. I admit, the routine could be better - but you don't need to have your own site...

Before getting my own site, I uploaded several photos to the forum member's "storage area".

No problem at all, as long as the size is less than 200 kB.

Hi all,

Just a thought.

I've just got into this topic from this one: http://www.marklin-users...topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12030

I've sent several pictures 1024 pixels wide (OK,OK, I know, it was my fault, and I should have read this topic first). I don't think that any of my 1024 pixel-wide picures are more than 200 kb in size (I've checked some of them, but not all).

I see that original message regarding pixel picture size was sent 5 years ago. I think that in 5 years many things have improved, including the screens for those who were using screen resolutions of 1024x768 or even lower (i.e. 800x600).

I wonder if it would not be "reasonable" to "update" picture resolution up to, if not 1024 pixels wide, at least, 800. I think that these pictures will fit in virtually 100% of actual screens with no need to scroll. Of course 200 kb size would not be affected...as I told you pictures that I have sent recently, 1024 pixels wide, have a size between 100 and 150 Kb.

It's just a thought. I really appreciate to see details in pictures and I think that this slight improvement would allow pictures to be better-detailed without disturbing anyone.

Of course from now on, my pictures will not be wider than 640 pixels. But Juhan, I'd like to get your opinion on this, as well as other members'.

Best regards.

Hi Brakepad,
My laptop screen appears to be 1440 x 900 (by hitting right button, and checking properties).
Of course on this site, we lose about 10% with margins etc.
So I guess this means I should be able to view 1024 size pictures without a problem?

Hi Kimball,

You can see pictures 1024 pixels wide with no need to scroll in this forum with a screen resolution 1280 pixels wide (and higher, of course).

You can check with the pictures in this topic:

http://www.marklin-users...topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11968

All of them are 1024 pixels wide.

Hi Brakepad,
Well a new standard would certainly appear to be justifiable.
We should get a response from Juhan (webmaster) at some stage if he is watching.

No!
I start at http://www.marklin-users.net/ and click on Discussion forum. If I go to this topic I do have scroll bars (with 1280 pels screen width).

Hi Tom,

Which topic?

I've tested with 1280 screen resolution width and the only scroll bar I have is vertical, not horizontal...if you look for the topic starting in the home page(home->discussion forum->H0 scale->topic) the "topic" screen is narrower but picture still fits with no horizontal scroll.

I'm using mozilla firefox, and maybe that makes some difference. I do not have MSexplorer installed so I can not check, but if that made any difference, the scroll should be really "small".

In any case, and as I wrote before, if 1024 is too much, maybe 800 would be OK. a 800 pixel-width picture will be "better to stare at" than a 640 pixel-width one, in my opinion.

Hi, Brakepad,

I'm talking 'bout "Primex BR01 "reconverting" to 3-rail (nice pics)".
The vertical scroll bar disappears when I maximize the browser window.

But normally I don't maximize the browser (to have other windows in sight) and then the scrollbar appears.

800 or maybe even slightly more should be fine.
Pictures should fit with a screen width of 1024 pels. Frames and avatars also need their space.

Maybe Juhan will be able to add a "_blank" to the Discussion forum link. Then the forum can be seen without the menu on the left.

In this thread
http://www.marklin-users...sp?TOPIC_ID=12013#172351
I still see vertical scrollbars (1600 pels are too much).
Regards
Tom

640x480 is the recommended size, so everyone can see. 800x600 is acceptable for most of us with 1024x768 and more resolution.

If you want to upload a bigger pic for a more detailed view, then please just put a link to it instead of using the img tags - then it will open in a new window if clicked...

Not everyone has megabit connections, so direct pics in the forum should be smaller in size.

Jon,

You did'nt upload "I hate you" (cursing)
No wonder you've got rejected with your advances.

You should know better, being a married man BigGrin

First of all:
1.) get a picture under 800 pixles.
1a.) http://www.marklin-users...s/upload/uploadstart.asp
1b.) decide which category.
upoad the picture by following the place of your photo.

1c.)http://www.marklin-users.net/applications/upload/listmypics.asp

You've saved the picture e.g. under "Motor".
click the text and a picture will appear, highlight the text, copy it,
now go to new topic in your selected topic and click the icon [img][/img]
now put yopur curser between the icons and click "paste".
Bingo, you should have a picture when sending the topic.

I hope you have some luck this time

Hi Guys,

As you can see I joined after 6 January 2010 and so I am not sure if the way to load pictures described in Juhan's first post will work for me as a new member. I am also a novice in relation to image uploads and I dont wan't to clutter up the forum (which Juhan I find fantastic-very informative and enjoyable)with posts that dont "work" (at least the image part), however from time to time when I have something relevant I would like to be able to put on posts with pictures. Does the system now work for newbies and how do you get to the "üpload" page from the normal forum. If possible and not too much trouble a short idiot's guide would be appreciated (or if this has been done -directions to it ).

Thank you

Murray, Pickies MUST be under 200 KB each. 600 X 400 Pixels will be nice size,

I may be wrong but the Upload looks to the old forum for access. SO until that is changed
the way to go is to upload the pickies to Image shack or Photobucket , copy the location of the Picky and paste into the post between the insrt Img tags.

Once things are sorted out the forum upload page is
www.marklin-users.net/upload/uploadstart.asp

use your normal log in and Password.

then take note of the final address , copy and paste between the Insert IMG tags
.

I have finally managed to make the "upload pictures to the site" routine work with the security model of the new forum software, so now members who have registered this year can also upload pictures. At least it worked when I tried.

Please report errors you get.

The links are:

http://www.marklin-users...s/upload/uploadstart.asp to upload pictures.

http://www.marklin-users...ns/upload/listmypics.asp to see the links and also view the pics.

Thanks very much Juhan,

As a post January novice you have now removed the second last obstacle to me being able to post photos. The last one is mine to overcome in the next few weekends, time to take and fiddle with the photos. Looking forward to the possibility of posting.

cheers

Juhan,

"Please report errors" you said, so:

500 - Internal server error.
There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

That's what I got when I tried to upload a picture. A server down? Or me doing something wrong?

There are 2 obvious conditions that trigger this error....

A file size > 200kb, and also if there is a file with the same name existing.

Another issue is that you should never use filenames with spaces or other "non-alphanumeric" characters like % & @ and so on.

My Great Picture.jpg = Not OK
MyGreatPicture.jpg = OK

Use the listmypics link to see what you already have.

Well it's in the instructions, try to use your picture program to make the original camera image smaller in size - a resized .jpg picture from camera (3000+ x 1500+ or such) still gives good enough detail on a screen if resized to the recommended 800x600 or so... Smile

The pictures are not great, but you get the picture... Hope you like them

Thanks a lot.

Hi Juhan,

I think I have followed the instructions, however, I can't get past 1st base. I've clicked on the upload link, as above, I type my user name and password, select not for publication, but this error comes up before I've even selected a photo. " 500 - Internal server error. "

What am I doing wrong?

Regards
Greg

maybe Photo Size is too large.

Max Size about 640X400 Pixels.

Thebest way is when making or replying to a post is to use the Attach Files to this post. This then will upload the photo from your computer. and plonk it in the post.

Yes, it worked, but I'd like to see it before I actually post the reply, like in "preview" - is this possible?

Unfortunately not with the "attach" method, but the method this topic is really about describes does.

The 500 Error this topic describes is fixed now - see http://www.m-users.net/f...ternal-server-error.aspx

one more time. The first photo I tried to post did not show up but it was 1.1MB which is too big. I am trying to export a photo that is not too big but still has a measure of detail.
