Joined: 23/09/2011(UTC) Posts: 155 Location: Sydney Australia		I decided to setup the train as I have 3 days off this week (yay me). Anyway here are some photos of my son playing conductor on the cement-track, lol (he is 3 and a half). And a couple vids following. Oh I got this start-set from my father (Set-S 2924) when I was 7 [21 years ago]. You'll see that I don't have alot of room to work with........ First couple are my son at the controls..... Next photo has custom Shutter set up (the train IS in motion) And this is photo has a custom Aperture setting (again train in motion). Next couple are just the train going 'round the floor. Joined: 23/09/2011(UTC) Posts: 155 Location: Sydney Australia		Since I've now sold my bike, and have also sold my aquarium (which hadn't been used in 4years anyway). And got rid of all the portable air-cons (we have wall units now). I again have some space in my cluttered garage. So before the space got filled with junk I decided to start on a permanent layout. Of which I will be asking for alot of help with trackplans, etc...... Anyway, the below pics are of my basboard/tabletop which I've constructed. Both are 1.2m x 1.2m (4' x 4') making a total of 2.4m x 1.2m (8' x 4'), they just need legs attached to them, and they're ready to go. I'll be making my way to ikea in the near future, as I would like the legs to be removeable. Floor space cleared Framing around the MDF board done. Bracing completed. More bracing will be added when I get the legs. Second tabletop nearing completion. This happened to interfere with beer-o-clock. Cheers. Thanks for looking.

My wife said she doesn't want the house rumbling at 3a.m. and have to deal with a screaming newborn at the same time. Anyway, I will pick up the legs tomorrow, and if I have some time, hopefully attach and set the tables right way up . Cheers.

Hi shintaro, 8' x 4' will be enough to make an interesting layout. In that space I got two circuits (ovals) and extra shunting spurs. I guess you are going analogue for now, so if you can separate the two circuits, and have two controllers, you can run two trains. regards Kimball

Kimball, For now it will be analogue. I plan on getting an ICE 3 RZD set first, then a digital starter set. I do plan on upgrading. Hi Ian, As promised some more pictures following.. Anyway, I forgot to take pictures during construction, but I do have some afterwards (of course). First few shots are of under the tabletop, baseically of the added bracing to support legs and weight Next one is of the height, it is almost to my waist line, the legs are 70cm high, plus table/girder height. And the finished product. I think I need to install two more support bars in the centre, going the opposing direction to all the others............ Only got one table done as I misjudged how long it would take. But tomorrow I must install a new shelf for my wife in our bedroom... Thanks for all of your comments. Till next the entry. Cheers. Any helpful thoughts/comments/tips would be appreciated, as I value all of your experience. I plan to be using c-tracks. Top level Lower level 3D Minimum radius in visible areas is R2, except for 2 pieces of R1 and the curved switches (which are of course R1 also). Whereever possible R3 is used for transition-curves. This trackplan covers what I thought would be best for my interest. A long tunnel and two levels. I was thinking maybe a 3rd level, maybe just a corner, with a church on it, but considering I dont have much space, it wouldn't suit. Thanks for taking a peep. Cheers.

Table with the supports done. now im thinking I should put 4 more in as well (in red circles), but I'm afraid I'm over doing things now (so does the wife, although she says it in another term)..... I need to go buy the legs and was wondering if the fixed 70cm legs would be tall enough to provide a "relaxed" working level. I think you have now answered my question On with the planning...... For that I am using free sofware - Scarm and wintrack free edition. For the latter I just take screen prints and that gives me sufficient detail to compare ideas. I couldn't go any higher than 70cm for the legs as my son will be "helping" me run the trains most of the time. He is still quite young, making him vertically challenged, and I didn't want him standing on a chair the whole time. With that said, I wouldn't have it any higher any way, it would make reaching across too difficult. In relation to the planning, I have tried to use SCARM and Raily, but they annoy me greatly. Raily more so. Hi Joe, Thank you for the positive input. Anyway its off to the hardware store today, to grab myself some more wood and screws. Anyway, following are some pictures, with my Br24 (from steventrain) and two passenger coaches. On the first coach I attached a NOCH track cleaning pad (which I bought today). And some vids. So the direct linking of vids to photobucket doesn't work here, click on them and they will play. I can't seem to find my login for youtube, so this will suffice for now. Have fun and take care. Going to the hobby store, which takes 15minutes, is alot easier, plus I get new track too! I forgot to add two pictures. They're of my son approving of the change... Thanks for looking.

That will come later when I decide how many controllers will be needed. I know I need at least 4 - but it maybe more What's this - leaving M track for C track . This is a growing trend I do understand your reasoning plus if it is for the little fella as well, as he grows up he will like it more if he can nip to the local store with his pocket money. If there is any M track now going spare I know someone that might need some.......... Mike

As the wife wants to be nowhere near one. Luckily I already had all of the gear screwed to a piece of wood. I just cut the remaining pieces of timber and used them as legs. Now the blue stool is actually a seat and not a controller stand. If your fine with solid rail m-track, I will pm you when I get the c-tracks, which will be after i get the start-set...... Cheers.

Re the controller, consider adding a pull-out drawer underneath, that way the controls are easily accessible but tucked out the way out of use when flush sides may be a big advantage for storage. Only caution would be making sure you have enough of a 'loop' of cables that fatigue from opening and closing won't be a problem. Alternatively, hinge the panel so it can drop down. This is the plan, but it will be one of the later phases of the layout. What I am planning for scenery and circuit won't be too complex as my skill isn't that great, just enough to trick the eye. I'll follow this post with some pics of what I meant in another of my previous posts, in regards to the controller stand. Currently it tucks away underneath fine. Next step will be to drill holes in the table to pass the wiring through, but that will happen when I have the approriate track....... Till next time. Cheers. P.s. Anyone know where I can get a cheap digital startset (and the catalog number) that I can get my hands on. I'm not fussed on what it is (MS1, MS2, etc.).

So far this is to be permanent, as I have no plans to move house in the near future. Yeah my son loves it on a table 100% more than he did on the floor. So yes I will be continuing this, and posting updates here as things progress. But for progress a cashflow is needed, and items to be recieved, i.e. no items no progress, no cash no items. I was taking some pictures, and my son decided to do the same I got him trainspotting. And a pic from my collection of my favourite carriage A vid of the dual circuit. Thanks for all of the positive feedback I've had so far. Hopefully when I go back to work (in a month) I'll have a digital controller and c-track to actually start on the actual layout plan. The same applied to me, for a long time I always wanted a layout. I was watching this forum for a few months before posting my tracks on a floor. Then things sort of fell into place - my wife made me sell my bike (I only sold it for my son to be, and not for her sake) which gave me the room for a layout. My wife agreed as she noted that with a train setup there is no room for a motorcycle, or the cashflow. I am ecstatic that I have inspired you to do the same. But as I have said in my previous post, I won't have an update for at least a month (with a new child due any moment now, my hands will be full). Enjoy the forum, there are truly wonderful layouts in all of the threads here . Have a great day. Cheers.

Whilst driving to the baby store as my wife wanted to collect a pram she had ordered (also hoping that making plans would prompt her into labour), I went next door to a shop called "Clark Rubber". Went to their off-cut section and grabbed two large pieces of high density foam offcuts, it cost a total of AU $1.00. Results below. .. I am more than pleased with the outcome as this is my first "scratch built" piece of scenery. Now I gotta paint it, flock it, then moss it. Take care.

So, I let my son complete his tunnel (after all it was made just to keep him happy), some pics. .. I have since put wood on top of the decals until the glue dries. I did purchase a portal, but decided I'd keep this for the proper build. And those Noch track pads I bought, this result is after 2 days of running (about 2hrs total). I looked at the WS tunnel portals but opted instead for the Faller ones as it states they are for catenary operation. I take it you will not be using catenary The Noch pads - they are for cleaning the track? I've never seen or used anything like that you see. Just three days (max) to go then. cheers Mike

In regards to cantenary, no I will not be using it, but the portal I have bought is tall enough to allow for cantenary. I may have to watch out for the Faller portals, as from your pictures they are already coloured. The WS portals are plaster and are unpainted. Cheers, Marc.

Although, all other functions of this program elude me (i.e. level creation). It's the bottom level only. . Red circles will leed to upper level. Will plan that one when the bottom is finished. Anyway, next time I make an entry it won't be train related.

I have since then acquired 29475 from forum member Hoffman, and some c-track turnouts. Also got an MS-2 and some R3 curves from a fellow forum member. I still have not nearly enough c-track even for a loop, but I am slowly getting more as I'm still unsure on my track plan. Either way, I set up the MS on my M track, for the two new digital additions. Pics below. .. And some vids. . Take care.

The ICE pantographs (and any other single arm pantographs) you should note from above a little curved ie: ( (bracket) type piece of plastic. Just apply enough pressure to the front of the wiper to gently flick it up from the bracket. So I have made another plan and have put the pics below. For some reason WinTrack thought there was a construction malfunction which had caused the centre of the tunnel to collapse. . To locate mine I postioned some 2 x 1 inside the tunnel (and secured to the plywood sides of the tunnel) and then drilled through to take an M8 bolt. I countersunk the complete nut and so the end of the bolt is sticking out and locates into a drilled hole in the baseboard. You can see the bolt head and large washer (to prevent pull through) in this picture. There is a similar one on the back of the vertical wood in fron tof you. That way it locates securely every time. Since its so difficult to get extruded polystryene (insu foam as the Americans call it) here, I was thinking I might be able to put gyprock (I think the Americans call that dry-wall?) under the tracks, say if I wanted to carve out a ditch, as this would give me some depth without being as tough as wood.... Once you cut it, the edges breakup very easily, leaves a white powder every where, and just makes a mess. For me, I'd stick with wood and buy yourself a cheap router. Ian.
