Railcolor.net is reporting that the SBB has formed a new entity, SBB Cargo International, which will handle operations from the North Sea to the Mediterranean, in other words, from Germany to italy. SBB Caro International's Head Office will be in Olten. The SBB Cargo International fleet is sublet from SBB Cargo and includes the following equipment (as listed by Railcolor.net):

Railpool 186 103, 181 (leased) (NL, BE, DE)
SBB Cargo 474 002-005, 009, 012-018 (CH. IT)
SBB Cargo 482 000-019, 021-027 (DE, AT, CH)
SBB Cargo 484 001-018 (CH. IT)

I do not know what this means for Re 482 020, 28-34 and 35-49, Re 421 371-381, 383-397.

I presume that the Re 420, Re 620 and Ae 610 remain with SBB Cargo for Inland use.

Regards

Hi Mike
Interesting news.
I think it makes sense to keep the Re 620 and Ae 610 inland: I don't think they were ever authorized outside of CH.
AFAIK, only a few Re 420 were equipped with one different DB/OBB panto and German/Austria in cab signal/safety ECTS system
Those have been seen as far north as Dortmund
What I don't know is how far the older generation SBB locos (for inland traffic) are now equipped with the ECTS.
Cheers

Are you sure they will not include serving the port of rotterdam (on the north sea)? There is a dedicated cargo line running from Rotterdam to the Ruhr in Germany, which is serving a lot of destinations urther in Europe as well.

I would have thought that the Re421 particularly pull freight or sometimes passenger trains to Germany.
Maybe they still are.
Been New Zealander for a while, now in SE Asia.
Will take a while to fit the tracks back together and run my loks again.

Locos with DB panthograph are called Re 421, Re 420 are for Switzerland only.
Last digit indicates Swiss only (0) or outside Swiss (1: single system, 2: two systems, 4: four systems).

The announcement as quoted in Railcolor mentioned specifically the loks named in my original post.

SBB Cargo had two subsidiaries, SBB Cargo Deutschland and SBB Cargo Italy. The new SBB Cargo International seems to include the loks previously operated by SBBCI, with the exception of the Am 840. Of the Loks assigned to SBBCD, the Re 482 035-49 and Re 421 are not listed as being part of the SBB Cargo International roster. It is possible that some of the Re 482 may be retained for domestic operation and that the Re 421 may also be shifted to inland operation, leaving only (or primarily) the Re 482 to handle operations north of Basel.

As far as operations to Rotterdam, I believe that the reason for the acquisition of the RailPool leased class 186 was to have loks with NL/BE authorization. Previously, SBB Cargo loks had worked only as far as Aachen.

I will try to see if I can find more info on the SBB Cargo and SBB websites.

http://www.sbbcargo-inte.../index.php?id=de&L=2

SBB Cargo International is owned 75% by SBB Cargo (Basel) and 25% by Hupac AG (Chiasso). It's head office is in Olten and specializes in Intermodal, Piggyback (Hupac), Car Transport and other Block Trains (Petrochemicals) between Northern Europe (Germany, Belgium Netherlands) and Italy.

I am still not quite clear on what operations will be SBB Cargo International and which ones will remain under the domain of SBB Cargo AG Basel.
I also managed to learn that Hupac has acquired a percentage of the company Crossrail in 2010.

From what I can tell, the remaining loks will be used for domestic and transit of international trains between border stations NW (Basel, Singen, Buchs, Vallorbe) and border stations SE (Chiasso, Domodossola). SBB Cargo operations will increase on the Loetschberg-Simplon axis, both from Germany but also from France (Vallorbe, Geneva). As expected, SBB Cargo Deutschland and SBB Cargo Italia have been 100% integrated into the new SBB Cargo International.

Making it more confusing, SBB Cargo owns just under 24% of Hupac as well.

Hello,

very interesting news. Thank you very much for sharing.

So far, the Re 421 could be seen all over Germany. I met the loco for instance in Rostock at the Baltic Sea.

As for the foundation of SBB Cargo International: the above linked website tells me that the company was already founded in 2010 and that SBB Cargo Deutschland GmbH and SBB Cargo Italia S.r.l. are 100% daughter companies of SBB Cargo International. Maybe the change in the fleet simply reflects the fact that now enough other locos than the Re 421 are available and probably these others locos are more flexible to use outside Switzerland especially when we think o maintenance.

Best

One or two Re 421 have been leased to other operators. I recently saw a photo of a Re 421 which advertised that the lok was seemingly for lease or for sale.
